Horses racing on a dirt track

The last of the Triple Crown races, the Belmont Stakes, is done for 2021. This is the 153rd running of the Belmont Stakes. Essential Quality was able to get past Hot Rod Charlie by the last turn and won the race.

The top four contenders for the Belmont Stakes was Essential Quality, Hot Rod Charlie, Rombauer, and Rock Your World. [1]

Running The Race

After the gates opened, Hot Rod Charlie was the leader. As the horses went down the 1 1/2 mile track, often called “the test of the champion,” Essential Quality started pulling away from Hot Rod Charlie on the final turn. [2]

Trainer Talk

Head trainer, Brad Cox said that the race was going to be exciting.

I knew it was going to be a battle down the lane. [3]

The jockey for Essential Quality, Luis Saez, said that he wanted to win the Belmont Stakes.

This was the race I wanted to win. [4]

Who Was Where

Essential Quality, of course, won the race by 1 1/4 lengths. Hot Rod Charlie was second, Rombauer, who won the Preakness, was third, and Known Agenda was fourth. [5]

The Triple Crown

As already known, there is no Triple Crown winner this year. Medina Spirit won the Kentucky Derby, but might be disqualified for failing the drug test. [6] Rombauer won the Preakness Stakes [7] and Essential Quality won the Belmont Stakes.

The Belmont Stakes was held on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at the Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.
