How healthy is your baby’s food? This is your child’s beginning, and you want the best of everything for him. You choose the best crib, clothing, bath wash, and food. But is the food you choose actually the best for your child? Not necessarily. Researchers are finding that most baby food sold in U.S. grocery stores is ultra-processed. This study found that 71% of baby food products sold in grocery stores are classified as ultra-processed foods.

Additives

Additives are the number one ingredient in many baby foods. Nearly three-quarters of all baby food products in the study contained additives. Researchers identified more than 105 unique additives, including flavor enhancers, thickeners, emulsifiers, and colors. Other studies link certain food additives to potential health concerns, including negative effects on gut function and behavioral difficulties in sensitive children.

Sugar, Salt, And Calories

Ultra-processed baby foods contained nearly twice as much sugar as products that were not ultra-processed. Sodium levels were also higher in ultra-processed baby foods, containing far more sodium per 100 grams than less processed products. These findings were prevalent in snacks and finger foods. At a time when young children are developing their taste preferences, adding sugars and salt to their foods is not wise.

Do?

While some states are considering relabeling foods, especially for young children, parents need to take control of their children’s diets. Offering whole foods, naturally grown and sweetened with real fruit, is best for young, developing children.
