While families enjoy getting out over the Fourth Of July, celebrating our nation’s birthday, animals do not share the same fondness for the festivities as we do. In fact, booming sounds, flashing colors, and fireworks in general are terrifying, overwhelming, and hazardous to wild and domestic animals.

Fireworks on the Fourth of July can scare many animals, causing them to flee familiar environments and people and sadly become lost. Stress can also have devastating or even fatal effects on their health. When light flashes and sounds are heard suddenly, wild animals may run into roadways, causing more car accidents than usual. Is there a way to prevent this? At least for our pets? Yes! AKC offers six simple ideas to help your pet through Independence Day.

Keep Away!

Keeping your pet away from fireworks should be a given. If you do not live near neighbors, do not bring fireworks home to frighten your dog.

Proper ID

You should make sure your indoor and outdoor pets have proper identification. In the event of loud noises, he could run away. With an ID, he will be reunited with his owner.

Safe Haven

This is a known place the dog feels safe. Oftentimes, this is indoors. Put him where he feels safe- often in a crate. It is good to play soothing music. Even white noise will drown out the fireworks snaps. Try putting a fan on to erase other sounds.

Stay With Him

Another obvious way to help your pet through this anxiety-filled time is simply staying with your pet. Stay calm and speak reassuringly.

Sounds

Preceding the fireworks shows, you may want to walk your pet. This will make him fall asleep quicker. You can play noises that resemble fireworks, just not too loud. This will acclimate him to these sounds.

Vet

If your pet is excitable, you may want to visit your vet with concerns., He may prescribe soothing medications for your pet during this time.

Independence Day is a time of celebration. Although pets may not like the lights and sounds, you can help prepare your pet for an enjoyable evening fot each of you.
