A new year is upon us. Whenever a new year comes, a lot of people think about new year’s resolutions. If you want to make a list of new year’s resolutions but aren’t sure where to start, here are 10 new year’s resolution ideas.
Tips
Before getting into the resolution ideas, here are some tips to keeping your goals. To begin with, make specific goals. [1] Instead of a goal of “lose weight,” make a goal to “lose 10 pounds.” Another tip is to have your resolutions out in the open: don’t write it on a piece of paper and put it on a shelf; tape your goals on your mirror. A final way to keep achieving your new year’s resolutions is to tell your friends and family what they are so they can help hold you accountable and keep you on track. [2]
#1 Clean Regularly
The first new year’s resolution is to clean your house regularly. [3] Make a goal to clean your house for 10 minutes a day; or set one day a week as your cleaning day.
#2 Go Somewhere New
Another resolution is to visit somewhere new throughout the year. The location doesn’t have to be in a big city or over a hundred miles away, it can be as simple as visiting historical sites nearby or going to a different river access.
#3 No-Spend Time
A resolution pertaining to your finances is having a no-spend time throughout the year whether it be every week, every month, or every quarter. [4] During the no-spend time set, make a list of what you can spend, such as bills; what you shouldn’t spend, such as eating out; and exceptions, such as a birthday.
#4 Game Night
A fourth resolution you can do is to plan and have a game night once a month (or once a week). [5] This can be with friends or with family. Bring board or card games, snacks, and a fun attitude to the game night.
# 5 Invest
Another resolution to make for 2026 is to invest a certain amount of money each month. It can be as small as $10 a month or as big as $100 a month. Even a little bit will make a difference in the end; and by the end of the year, you’ll be that much more ahead.
#6 No Phones
A more challenging resolution for some is to have a no phone day once a month. [6] On that day, don’t go on your phone or computer or any other technological device. If you aren’t able to do it for a day, try an hour or two.
#7 Learn a Skill
A seventh resolution you can try is learning or trying one new skill in 2026. [7] It can be going to an exercise class or a public speaking class, learning an instrument, learning a foreign language, taking a dance class, or trying new recipes.
#8 Competition
If you want a more physical resolution, make a goal to participate in a physical event. [8] The event can be as simple as a 1 mile walk/run fundraiser or it can be more advanced such as a triathlon.
#9 Impulse Buying
A final resolution you can have for 2026 is to avoid impulse buying. [9] It may be difficult, but when you shop, have a list of what you’re looking for and only buy what’s on the list. Avoiding impulse buying will save you money.
