Summer is upon us: the humidity, the 80+ degree temperatures. We know we still have stuff to do outside, but the heat is almost unbearable. Here are seven easy ways to stay cool inside and outside in the summer.
#1 Stay Hydrated
An easy way to stay cool is to drink liquids. [1] It can be water, juice, milk, sports drinks- just keep hydrated because hydration will keep your body temperature more level. Caffeinated drinks are not the best since they dehydrate you more.
#2 Freeze Fruit
On a day when you know it will be hot out, freeze some fruit like strawberries, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, and pieces of watermelon, cantaloupe, or honeydew. [2] When you come in from outside, you’ll have a snack that will cool you down.
#3 Wear Light Clothes
Darker clothes absorb more sunlight while lighter-colored clothes reflect sunlight. When you go outside, wear brighter colored clothes and loose-fitting clothes.
#4 Freeze Your Pillowcase
Another way to stay cool in the summer is to freeze your pillowcase. [3] When you’re ready for bed, take the pillowcase out of the freezer and put it on the pillow. It will help you be cool at bedtime.
#5 Cotton Sheets
Another way to cool down while sleeping is to have cotton sheets. Cotton sheets are made of natural fibers, making them breathable, temperature-controlling fabric. [4] Instead of sheets made of a silkier material, cotton sheets will keep you dry and cool.
#6 Being Outside
Try to be outside in the morning to late afternoon/evening when the sun isn’t at it’s strongest. Sometimes you may have to go out in the heat of the day, but try not to if you have a choice.
#7 Cooking
If possible, limit cooking on the stove or in the oven for cooler days. If you do have to use the oven or stove, use it later in the evening when it’s cooling down for the night. [5]
