What’s This About No More Postmarks On Mail?

Have you noticed anything different about postmarks? This could mean the difference between a late payment and an on-time payment.

As of December 24, 2025, the USPS no longer posts a postmark on all mail; postmarks now indicate the date of processing at a regional facility rather than the date of collection. This means items, especially those dropped in mailboxes, may lack a postmark or show a date later than the day of mailing, which can create issues for time-sensitive, deadline-driven documents.

Changes

1. In the past, the postmark reflected when the mail was first accepted by the USPS. It now reflects the date it was first processed.

2. The USPS will not postmark all of the mail during regular processing.

3. Mail in a drop-box may or may not receive a postmark. This could ned in late fees or penalties.

4. If you want a postmark, go directly to a counter and request a hand-stamped postmark from the employee.

5. Alternative idea: if you need a postmark, you can use certified mail, or switch carriers to UPS or FedEx.

Also…

Besides those changes, USPS is consolidating processing centers. Mail may take longer to reach the post office for official postmarking.
