New Year- New Flag For Minnesota?

Former Minnesota Flag

Former Minnesota Flag

Changes happen when the new year begins. People want new beginnings. If you travel north into Minnesota, you may not recognize a landmark: its flag. Legislators in Minnesota had been working on this particular change for a while. This is the year it has a new flag.

Why The Change?

Some people complained that the old flag was confusing with so many details. The former flag allegedly reminds native Americans of conquest and displacement. This flag was based on the state’s seal, which was also changed.

New Flag

The new flag includes a dark blue angle resembling Minnesota on the left, with a white, eight-pointed North Star on it. On the right is a light blue field. This symbolizes the abundant waters that help define the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Critics

Most residents are not in favor of the new design. Nonetheless, supporters of the new flag hope it will grow in favor with people. Most people did not like the old flag.

Support

Many Native Americans approve of the ideas in the flag and state seal, feeling that native Americans are better represented. Minnesota is  a state where there are 11 federally recognized Ojibwe and Dakota tribes.

Unless the Legislature votes to reject the new emblems and flag, which seems unlikely, they will become official on May 11 this year.
