The month of August is National Wellness Month. Good health contributes to long life and being active in your family’s life. Here are five ways you can take care of yourself.
#1 Sleep
People may often overlook the amount of sleep one should get, but sleep is essential. Getting enough sleep has been shown to lower the chances of high blood pressure and obesity, allow certain hormones to work correctly, decrease the chance of catching illnesses, and help with thinking and memory. [1]
#2 Nutrition
Another important aspect of your health is what you eat and drink. Everything should be eaten in moderation. Fruits have many vitamins and minerals, and they reduce diabetes and stroke; and not eating too much fat lowers the chance of heart disease. [2] Nutrition is key to your wellness.
#3 Exercise
A third way to contribute to your wellness is by exercising. Exercising can be as simple as going for a walk or it can involve much more such as being involved in different types of exercise classes. Exercising has many benefits: it improves your mood, lowers the chance of illnesses, helps control weight, boosts energy, and helps with sleeping. [3]
#4 Take Care of Yourself
People often get consumed with all they have to do and accomplish, and in return, they get overwhelmed and stressed out. Make it a point to take care of yourself. It can be as simple as reading before bedtime, getting your hair done every couple of months, going to a sit-down restaurant once a month, watching a movie once a week, or sitting on the porch with a cup of tea.
#5 De-Stress/Laugh
A 2025 study showed that 77% of people have stress that impacts their physical health. [4] The Bible says in the second half of Matthew 6 to “Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink… Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them.” Laughter has been known to stimulate your organs, make you feel relaxed, soothe tension, improve your immune system, and improve your mood.
