Famous American actor Ed Asner died Sunday at the age of 91. He was best known for his acting in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”where he won acting awards. He also performed more recently in ‘Up’ and ‘Elf”.

Growing Up

Ed Asner was born November 15, 1939 in Kansas City, Missouri. After graduating high school, he studied journalism at the University of Chicago. A professor advised against that and he eventually dropped out of college. He was drafted into the military in 1951.

Acting Career

After his military service, Asner helped the Playwrights Theater Company in Chicago before heading to New York and eventually California. Various acting jobs came available to him. However, his first film debut was in 1962. Although he performed in several movies preceeding ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’, that show brought him several Emmys. Meanwhile, other mini-series followed that helped earn him additional awards. Recently, he was the voice of the lead character in the movie “Up”. He also was Santa in the movie “Elf.”

Personal Life

Asner married Nancy Sykes. They had three children and divorced in 1988. He had a child out of wedlock in 1987. Then in 1998, he married Cindy Gilmore. He filed for divorce in 2015 [1]. He is survived by two daughters, tow sons, and ten grandchildren.

Passing

Asner passed away at his home in Tarzana, Ca on August 29, 2021. He was 91.
