Governor Kehoe of Missouri signed into law Senate Bill 68 which says that students cannot be on a cell phone while at school.
The Bill
Senate Bill 68 has made it that students cannot have any electronic devices while they are at school. This law will be in effect starting in the 2025-26 school year. Electronic devices may not be used by students from the beginning of the school day until the end of the school day, including teaching time, meals, breaks, time between classes, and study halls. [1]
The Schools
This bill affects each school district and charter school in Missouri.
Electronic Devices
Senate Bill 68 specifically says “electronic personal communication devices.” Those devices are defined as a portable device that is used to initiate, receive, store, or view communication, information, images, or data electronically. [2]
Discipline and Exception
If students fail to comply with the rule, the school will mete out disciplinary action. Exceptions to the law include if a student needs devices for specific educational or health needs.
Why the law?
The new school policies should be made to promote educational interests and ensure a safe, effective working environment for staff and volunteers.
Emergencies
If an emergency were to happen to a family and they want to contact their child, they may call the school, and the school will tell the student.
