This year, America is celebrating its 250th birthday. While celebrations are ongoing, we often look back to see how America celebrated its 200th birthday, its bicentennial. Recently, we interviewed locals who lived during the bicentennial to hear what they remember.
Nationwide Events
The bicentennial was a big event. Most places celebrated it for months. July 4, 1976, was celebrated with large parades and larger fireworks displays; communities came together to share history and laughs. It was a time of oneness.
Nationwide reenactments of various battles took place along the coast. The American Freedom Train began a journey across 48 states, starting in April of 2025. President Ford lit a lantern at the Old Church North, commemorative of Paul Revere’s ride.
Ships
Sailing ships were displayed in New York City. Washington, D.C., held a huge Bicentennial Parade. This is comparable to the sailing ships along the eastern seaboard.
Comparison
Many events from the 200th anniversary are similar to our current 250th anniversary. Communities are getting involved in the celebrations. Nationwide, we celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States of America, this country God ordained.
